The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Indian government’s commitment to the growth of these Union Territories, asserting that it aims to enable all citizens to “dream big, achieve, and contribute” to the vision of Viksit Bharat or Developed India.
Modi pointed out how the full incorporation of the Constitution has empowered previously marginalized communities, ensuring that everyone enjoys equal rights and opportunities that were long denied.
In his post on X, he stated, “Seven years ago, on this day, Articles 370 and 35(A) became history, marking a decisive new chapter in the journey of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh.” This statement underscores how the abrogation has paved the way for a new era of inclusive development, aiming to integrate these regions more closely with the rest of the country.
On August 5, 2019, the **BJP-led government** moved to revoke Article 370, which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This action resulted in the division of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Modi reiterated the government’s commitment by stating, “We reaffirm our commitment to the progress of Jammu and Kashmir as well as Ladakh to ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to dream big, achieve, and contribute to the making of a Viksit Bharat.”
Notably, August 5 this year bears additional significance, as it coincides with the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, whose lifelong dedication to national unity inspires generations. Mookerjee’s vision of the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India found historic realization on this date in 2019.
Mookerjee, the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a precursor to the current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, vigorously advocated for the repeal of Article 370. He was born on July 6, 1901, and tragically passed away under detainment in Srinagar on June 23, 1953. His efforts continue to resonate in the policymaking of today, furthering the narrative of unity and progress.
As Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh embark on their journey of transformation, the focus remains on sustainable development and empowerment of all citizens, reinforcing the government’s resolve to promote equitable growth in both regions.
