PDP Leader Waheed Para Condemns Giriraj Singh’s Remarks

PDP leader Waheed Para condemned Union Minister Giriraj Singh over his derogatory remarks labeling former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti as a “terrorist”. Para characterized these comments as “outrageous” and “irresponsible” during a statement made on Wednesday.

Para stated, “Giriraj Singh’s remarks calling PDP president Mehbooba Mufti a ‘terrorist’ are outrageous and beneath the dignity of a Union Minister. Such language against a former chief minister of J&K and a senior Muslim woman leader reflects nothing but prejudice and political intolerance.” He shared these views in a post on X.

The controversy ignited when Singh accused Mufti, leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of always supporting terrorists. He insisted that the BJP had previously attempted to reform Mufti during its alliance but ceased when no improvement became evident.

“Since there was no improvement, we let her go,” Singh asserted, further contributing to the escalating tension surrounding the remarks.

In response, Para emphasized that Singh’s comments reveal more about his personal mindset than a political stance. He remarked, “This is not a political statement; it is a reflection of Giriraj Singh’s own mindset,” highlighting the inflammatory nature of such accusations.

Adding fuel to the fire, Mufti recently attracted criticism for holding the national flag upside down during a protest against the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. This act sparked significant controversy and political debate.

The ongoing dispute showcases the rising political tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly surrounding national unity and the sensitivities involved in discussing prominent political figures. Leaders across party lines often resort to sharp language as the region remains a focal point of complex political narratives.

As the discussions unfold, Para and others challenge the implications of Singh’s statements. The reaction from various quarters illustrates the deeply divided opinions on the political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, especially regarding past alliances and the continual impact of sectarian politics.

Political analysts are likely to use this incident to assess the changing dynamics of party strategies, particularly as the PDP and BJP prepare for future elections. The criticisms exchanged between leaders reflect broader ideological clashes that resonate with the electorate.
