GOPESHWAR/DEHRADUN: The tragic toll from the Chamoli tunnel accident in Uttarakhand reached nine on Tuesday, as rescue teams discovered the body of one of the missing workers. The recovery occurred during continued search operations initiated after the unfortunate landslide and flooding of the tunnel on August 13.
Chamoli District Disaster Management Officer NK Joshi reported that the body has been sent to Gopeshwar District Hospital for identification. Rescue efforts remain critical, as another worker is still unaccounted for following this catastrophic event.
The unfortunate incident resulted from a landslide, which filled the tunnel with debris and water, disrupting the worksite and leaving twelve other workers injured. Following the incident, a coordinated rescue and relief operation sprang into action.
A joint team comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), local police, and other agencies has mobilized extensive resources to conduct search and rescue operations since the accident occurred. These efforts continue around the clock.
Officials emphasized the challenges posed by the treacherous conditions within the tunnel, where sludge and debris pile up, complicating search efforts. Despite these adverse circumstances, the teams persist in their mission. Substantial efforts are underway to remove debris and pump out water using suction pumps and additional resources, facilitating access to search for the missing worker.
Chamoli District Information Officer Dheeraj Karki informed reporters that three of the five trapped JCB machines have been recovered from the tunnel, which spans three kilometers. This clearance has significantly accelerated search operations for the remaining workers.
Karki assured that teams are focused on retrieving the remaining two machines still trapped in the rubble. Officials are hopeful that these operations will soon lead to locating the last missing worker.
The ongoing efforts highlight the resilience and dedication of the rescue teams in the face of overwhelming obstacles. As they navigate through challenging conditions to recover their missing colleagues, the communities affected by this tragedy remain hopeful for a positive outcome.
