The Lok Sabha proceedings faced adjournment on Friday following a series of protests led by Opposition members over pressing issues, including the NEET paper leak and the alleged theft related to Ram temple donations. This situation arose as tensions escalated between Opposition parties and the ruling government, marking yet another instance of turmoil in the Monsoon session.
As protests erupted in the House, members vocally expressed their dissent, making it impossible to conduct normal legislative business. In the midst of this uproar, the House managed to pass the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026 without any debate, highlighting the growing rift in parliamentary operations.
During the uproar, various papers and reports from Parliamentary committees were presented, but the chaos overshadowed these procedural matters. The persistent demand from Opposition members focused on a response from Home Minister Amit Shah concerning police actions during student protests triggered by the NEET paper leak.
Addressing the situation, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju firmly stated, “The Opposition cannot dictate which minister shall respond in the House.” He emphasized that Home Minister Shah regularly attends Parliament and works late into the night, suggesting that the protesting members should cease their disruptive actions.
In a plea for order, Dilip Saikia, who was presiding over the session, urged the gathered members to cooperate and allow Parliament’s regular functions to resume. Saikia’s request to the members was clear: “Please go to your seats. Please cooperate.” However, despite these pleas, vocal protests and slogans filled the air, leading to the adjournment of Zero Hour just 16 minutes after it commenced. The Lok Sabha will reconvene on Monday.
This disruption was not an isolated incident. Earlier in the day, the Question Hour was also interrupted as protests led to another adjournment until noon. Since the Monsoon session began on July 20, legislative proceedings have faced consistent interruptions due to ongoing disagreements between the ruling party and multiple Opposition factions.
The continuous turmoil highlights the increasing division within the Parliament, as both sides remain firm in their stances, challenging the dynamics of governance and legislative efficiency. With debates overshadowed by protests, the concerns about the NEET paper leak and other critical matters remain unresolved, leaving a cloud of uncertainty over future legislative actions.
As the session draws on, it remains to be seen how the Government will address the various issues raised by the Opposition and whether they will find a pathway towards constructive dialogue to foster legislative progress.
