India, on Friday, marked a pivotal moment in its foreign policy by upgrading its technical mission in Kabul to full embassy status. This significant announcement came during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s meeting with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi. The meeting underscored India’s commitment to renewing diplomatic ties with Afghanistan amid evolving regional dynamics.
Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India had withdrawn all its officials from the Kabul embassy, re-establishing only a “technical team” in June 2022 for limited operations. This latest upgrade reflects India’s intention to deepen its engagement in Afghanistan, particularly focusing on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and strengthening regional security.
During his opening remarks, Jaishankar stated, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He highlighted India’s deep interest in the progress and development of the Afghan people, given the geographical and historical ties between the two nations.
Jaishankar also reaffirmed India’s long-standing partnership with Afghanistan, which has been highlighted through various developmental projects over the years. He commended the Taliban administration for its demonstration of “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” especially after the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
The External Affairs Minister emphasized a shared commitment between India and Afghanistan to growth, stability, and prosperity while acknowledging the overarching threat posed by cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” Jaishankar remarked, emphasizing the need for collaborative security measures.
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi reciprocated India’s sentiments by describing the country as a critical regional player that has historically supported the Afghan populace. He expressed gratitude for India’s ongoing humanitarian assistance and highlighted Kabul’s eagerness to expand cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and education.
This upgrade to India’s diplomatic mission in Kabul signifies a cautious yet strategic re-engagement with the Taliban-led government.
