India is calling on the international community to prevent terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) from exploiting Afghanistan. In a statement delivered on Wednesday, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, stressed the importance of closing off opportunities for these organizations.
The call comes during a UN Security Council meeting focused on Afghanistan, where Harish highlighted that India has a vested interest in ensuring peace and stability in the region. “The international community must coordinate efforts to ensure that entities designated by the UN, such as ISIL and Al Qaeda, are contained and prevented from operating from Afghan territory,” he stated.
Monitoring the Security Situation in Afghanistan
India is closely monitoring the evolving security situation in Afghanistan. Harish pointed out that the relationship between India and Afghanistan is rooted in deep civilizational ties. This connection fuels India’s commitment to support stability in the face of ongoing challenges.
During his address, Harish noted, “We believe in the utmost importance of international consensus and cooperation on issues concerning Afghanistan.” The importance of partnerships to achieve peace was evident in his mention of India’s active involvement in international meetings, notably in Doha and other regional forums.
Need for Nuanced Approaches
Harish emphasized that any strategy to stabilize Afghanistan must be more nuanced. Merely focusing on punitive measures is unlikely to yield positive results. He mentioned that the U.N. and the global community have taken more sophisticated approaches in other post-conflict scenarios, and Afghanistan requires similar attention.
“Afghanistan needs a fresh approach with unused policy instruments to support its people who are in dire need,” Harish asserted. He cautioned that a business-as-usual approach is inadequate, as it only preserves the current state of affairs, which could worsen conditions.
Humanitarian Support Amid Challenges
The need for humanitarian assistance is pressing in Afghanistan. The aftermath of last month’s devastating earthquake has compounded the issues of poverty and disease. In light of ongoing crises, Harish called for compassionate action to aid millions suffering in Afghanistan.
India has been proactive in offering help, quickly providing 1,000 family tents and a significant supply of food to the earthquake-hit regions. An additional 21 tonnes of relief materials, including vital medical supplies and hygiene kits, were dispatched, with more assistance on the way.
Moreover, India’s humanitarian commitment is not new. Since the Taliban took control of Kabul in August 2021, India has supplied approximately 50,000 tonnes of wheat, over 330 tonnes of medicines and vaccines, and numerous other essential items to meet the urgent needs of millions.
Commitment to Afghanistan’s Development
Harish reaffirmed that India’s support for Afghanistan’s reconstruction is unwavering. “Our commitment to the developmental needs of the Afghan people is non-negotiable,” he remarked.
India has implemented over 500 development partnership projects across various provinces of Afghanistan. These projects aim to support the needs of the Afghan people and help them build a sustainable future. In collaboration with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, India has provided assistance focused particularly on women and drug rehabilitation.
Looking ahead, Harish stated that India’s immediate priorities include the delivery of humanitarian assistance and capacity-building initiatives for the Afghan people. As India continues to engage with all relevant stakeholders, the aim is to foster a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Afghanistan.
In conclusion, India’s proactive stance illustrates its commitment to not only combating terrorism but also addressing the humanitarian needs of Afghans. Through international cooperation and a focused strategy, there is hope for a more secure and resilient Afghanistan.
