India lodged a stern protest with the United States on Wednesday regarding its comments on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty and internal affairs of nations.
The Acting Deputy Chief of Mission from the US was summoned to the foreign office, where Indian officials firmly conveyed that the country’s legal processes are guided by an independent judiciary committed to fair and timely outcomes. Any insinuations questioning this integrity are unwarranted, they asserted.
Later, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement expressing strong objection to the remarks made by the spokesperson of the US State Department regarding certain legal proceedings in India. Diplomatically, nations are expected to uphold the sovereignty and internal affairs of others, especially among fellow democracies, to avoid setting harmful precedents.
The US State Department spokesperson, responding to a query about India summoning the German envoy over comments on Kejriwal’s arrest, stated that Washington had been closely monitoring the situation. They emphasized the importance of a fair, transparent, and timely legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal.
These remarks from the US followed similar comments from Germany regarding the arrest of the Delhi CM, which led to the summoning of a senior German diplomat by the Indian foreign office to express dissatisfaction.
