The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a warning regarding a significant wet spell across Jammu and Kashmir from August 9 to 11. The department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in areas of Jammu division, raising concerns about flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging.
According to a MeT official, light to moderate rain along with thundershowers is expected in many parts of the Union Territory on August 7 and 8. Some areas may experience brief but intense showers during this period.
From August 9 to 11, the MeT forecasts increased rainfall activity. Heavy to very heavy rain will likely affect several districts in Jammu division. There is also a chance of intense showers experiencing brief bursts in certain locations of the Kashmir valley.
After this initial period of heavy rainfall, the forecast suggests lighter rain and thundershowers from August 12 to 17, with brief intense showers still possible in some areas.
The advisory issued by the department for August 9 to 11 warns of a heightened risk of flash floods and landslides due to the anticipated torrential downpours. The department highlighted that vulnerable locations across the region could experience serious impacts, including waterlogging in low-lying areas.
“Torrential rain and brief intense heavy showers may generate flash floods and landslides at vulnerable places and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas,” the official stated.
Authorities advise residents to stay away from nallahs, landslide-prone areas, and other regions identified as vulnerable to flooding. Local authorities have been urged to remain vigilant and implement necessary precautionary measures to safeguard public safety.
