Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account to defame a woman. The accused targeted the victim by posting abusive and sexually explicit comments through the false profile.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, V Aravind Babu, reported that the suspect, a resident of Kachiguda, allegedly crafted the fake account specifically to harass a politically exposed woman based in Hyderabad. In October 2025, he used this account to post objectionable remarks on a video that featured the complainant.
The video, uploaded by the Instagram handle “Pura Local,” gained popularity and was quickly shared across various social media platforms. Following the norms of digital safety and respect, the victim filed a complaint, prompting the cybercrime unit to take action.
The police registered a case under several legal provisions, including Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act and Sections 79 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) to address cyber defamation and explicit content dissemination.
