As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, Kashmir stands at the forefront of enhanced security measures. The valley’s police chief, V K Birdi, announced on Tuesday that multi-layered security arrangements will ensure the peaceful conduct of events in the region.

Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, affirmed that robust security protocols extend beyond just the city of Srinagar. He emphasized the comprehensive approach, stating, “The Jammu and Kashmir Police always maintains robust security arrangements not just in Srinagar city, but across various districts of the valley.”

The police have established extensive measures not only at designated venues but also in surrounding areas to maximize safety for attendees. Birdi called on the public to actively participate, urging, “This is a public function. The police only act as a helper or organiser in this. We urge people to participate in these functions in large numbers and make them successful.”

Amid these preparations, Birdi addressed ongoing investigations related to recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama. He stated, “It is ongoing and so, it would not be appropriate for me to disclose that right now. Whenever there are such clear details or information to be shared with you, we will share them with you at an appropriate time.”

On Monday, as part of his security review, Birdi assessed the Independence Day arrangements during a meeting involving key security officials, including the IG BSF and IG CRPF. During this discussion, officers briefed Birdi on the specific security arrangements underway across all districts.

The meeting underscored a strategy for heightened security and vigilance. Birdi directed officers to intensify area domination and patrols in sensitive locales. He specified, “I directed officers to ensure preparations are completed well in advance.”

Special focus on security checkpoints and night-time surveillance highlighted the police’s proactive stance. Birdi urged heightened alertness against any disruptive elements, asserting ongoing vigilance across all jurisdictions.

Enhanced security measures also involved surprise checks and frisking operations in Lal Chowk and other key areas throughout Srinagar, reinforcing the commitment to public safety. The main function will occur at the iconic Bakshi Stadium, where officials work to finalize arrangements ahead of the anticipated celebrations.

Kashmiris, eager to celebrate their local and national pride, stand united to mark this historical occasion, bolstered by the assurance of meticulous safety protocols.
