Chief Minister Omar Abdullah firmly stated on Thursday that he and the National Conference (NC) will persist in their efforts to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, a commitment that aligns with the demands of the local populace.
Speaking to reporters after reviewing relief measures in the flood-affected Rajouri district, Abdullah emphasized, “Yes. We will continue our efforts until statehood is restored.” His assurance comes in light of rising public appeals for greater autonomy, highlighted by demonstrations throughout Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
These public rallies, which draw attention to the long-standing quest for statehood, encapsulate the sentiment of the many residents who have sought constitutional rights. Just days prior, both Abdullah and NC president Farooq Abdullah led a significant protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20, advocating for the return of full statehood and constitutional privileges for Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir underwent significant political changes following the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation into two Union Territories on August 5, 2019.
