The annual Amarnath Yatra, a significant pilgrimage for devotees, has been suspended from the Baltal route on Friday due to bad weather conditions that affected safety and accessibility. This decision aims to facilitate urgent repair work on the track, officials confirmed.

In a related update, the pilgrimage has already been halted from the Pahalgam route to allow for necessary repairs, indicating broader concerns about the safety of pilgrims during the ongoing yatra.

Severe rains fell in the Baltal area on Thursday night, causing a minor flash flood at one location. Fortunately, officials reported no loss of life or property damage resulting from the incident, ensuring the safety of communities and participants nearby.

The adverse weather conditions prompted authorities to restrict movement towards the holy cave shrine from the Baltal route, further emphasizing the need for safety precautions during the yatra. As officials pointed out, safety remains a top priority in light of the current circumstances.

While repair work on the affected tracks is actively progressing, officials remain hopeful that the yatra can resume safely once conditions improve. The annual pilgrimage, which began on July 3, has seen around 4.5 lakh devotees make their way to the cave shrine this season, which uniquely features a naturally formed ice lingam, making it a focal point for spiritual reflection.

Despite the hiccup, the yatra is expected to conclude on August 28, coinciding with the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Pilgrims and local authorities continue to monitor weather forecasts closely, hoping for favorable conditions in the days leading up to the significant conclusion of the yatra.
