In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care in Doda, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and subsequently discharged a newborn weighing an astonishing 6 kilograms at birth. This case marks one of the heaviest babies delivered at this institution, reflecting advancements in neonatal health services.
The infant, born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, came to the world through a diabetic mother and exhibited severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Immediately recognizing the critical condition, the healthcare team admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for intensive management and close monitoring.
Due to the newborn’s large size and initial respiratory challenges, specialized respiratory support became essential. The dedicated team closely assessed the baby’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological status. Over days of attentive care, the infant progressively improved, which allowed healthcare providers to gradually reduce respiratory assistance.
By the final three days leading up to discharge, the baby exhibited stable breathing patterns, normal oxygen levels, and effective temperature regulation, showcasing a significant recovery without any episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. Demonstrating consistent clinical stability, the infant was discharged in healthy condition, with recommendations for routine follow-up care to ensure continued well-being.
This successful management stemmed from the expertise and coordination under the leadership of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of the Department of Pediatrics, alongside faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their collaborative approach, supported by a team of dedicated senior and junior residents, played a vital role in this success.
