Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu has been awarded the Vir Chakra for his exceptional gallantry during Operation Sindoor conducted in May. The honour reflects his courageous actions against daunting challenges faced during this critical military operation.
The official citation, published in the Government Gazette on October 4, commended Captain Sidhu, stating he “flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy designated targets with surgical precision”. These missions unfolded amid complex threat scenarios characterized by layered air defences.
During the four-day military engagement between India and Pakistan, Captain Sidhu’s squadron, armed with state-of-the-art fighter aircraft, successfully executed operations in hostile airspace, accomplishing all assigned objectives with remarkable effectiveness.
The citation highlighted his resolute leadership, asserting that “As the Commanding Officer, Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu exhibited exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership and unwavering dedication to duty in a high-stakes combat environment, disregarding personal safety.”
His strategic execution involved planning and conducting operations from three different locations along the Western sector, where he not only led missions personally but also made “dynamic, real-time decisions” to counter evolving threats posed by the enemy.
Group Captain Sidhu’s commendable leadership significantly enhanced the offensive posture of the IAF under his command, according to the official document, marking a pivotal advantage during the critical operations.
In total, nine IAF pilots involved in precision airstrikes against terrorist infrastructure and military installations in territories controlled by Pakistan were awarded the Vir Chakra. This award is the nation’s third-highest wartime gallantry honour, reinforcing the valor displayed by the armed forces.
Other notable recipients include Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Captain Arora was recognised for his “dynamic leadership and courage”, especially during an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace, where he executed low-level night manoeuvres to achieve pinpoint accuracy despite the inherent risks from enemy radar and missile threats.
Additionally, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik received acknowledgement for his “resolute valour” and “audacious manoeuvring”, which effectively disoriented enemy formations, showcasing the skill and bravery of IAF personnel during Operation Sindoor.
On the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day, President Droupadi Murmu approved a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to honouring its armed forces for their unwavering bravery and dedication.
