Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, inaugurated the Annual Sports Meet-2025 at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar today. The event took place at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina, marking a significant day for the institution and its students.
During her address, Minister Itoo emphasized the vital link between physical and mental well-being of healthcare professionals and its profound impact on healthcare delivery. She praised GMC Srinagar for organizing the sports meet, underscoring that sports and recreational activities play a crucial role in stress management. This is especially relevant for students and professionals in demanding medical fields, where high levels of stress often arise.
In her remarks, Itoo urged the GMC administration to upgrade facilities at the Boys Hostel playground. She believes this enhancement will encourage maximum student participation in extracurricular activities, which are equally important as academic pursuits.
The two-day sports meet, organized under the guidance of Chairman of the Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features a diverse array of sporting events aimed at engaging students and fostering a sense of community. Sporting activities include cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, carrom, and tug of war, as well as track and field events such as 100m, 200m, 400m, relays, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw.
Additionally, the sports meet incorporates fun and traditional games, including matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race, which promote camaraderie and well-being among the medical students and professionals.
The event drew significant attendance, including Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, faculty members, students, and staff, all contributing to a vibrant atmosphere celebrating sports and health.
