Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, marking a significant milestone in bolstering Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector. This world-class facility is designed to position Gulmarg as a premier destination for international events, aspiring to emulate the prestige of Davos in Switzerland.
About the Gulmarg Convention Centre
Built at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC), the Gulmarg Convention Centre aims to promote tourism, cultural exchange, and international conferencing in the region. Present at the inauguration were various dignitaries, including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, and MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah.
Foundation Stone for Ski Hire Shop
In addition to the Convention Centre, Omar Abdullah also laid the foundation stone for a Ski Hire Shop, an initiative by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This is another step towards enhancing Gulmarg’s tourism infrastructure.
Significance of Timely Execution and Maintenance
During the event, Abdullah highlighted the importance of not only constructing physical structures but also ensuring their upkeep. “It’s easy to build four walls, but the real challenge lies in their maintenance and effective use,” he stated.
According to Abdullah, while the NBCC finished the project within budget, the furnishing aspect was overlooked. He assured attendees that both the Tourism Department and his Advisor are working on finishing the interior to ensure the Centre’s immediate usability.
Targeting MICE Tourism and High-profile Events
Omar Abdullah emphasized that the Convention Centre should serve as a hub for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism and high-profile events. He believes partnerships with other venues like the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) will allow for more effective marketing.
“When we think of Davos, I want people to recognize Gulmarg as India’s answer to it. We aim to host two to three major global events here annually,” he added.
Enhancing Evening Activities for Tourists
Recognizing the need for recreational activities, Abdullah noted that tourists often find themselves with limited evening options in Gulmarg, especially during winter. He proposed establishing coffee shops, restaurants, and even a digital cinema projection system. “This facility can change that. We want tourists to enjoy vibrant evenings,” he remarked.
Not only will these enhancements generate revenue, but they will also ensure the Convention Centre remains an active asset.
Encouraging Government Utilization
The Chief Minister also encouraged various government departments to utilize the Centre for meetings, training sessions, and official events until there is a marked interest from the private sector. He stated that it will allow for optimum usage while providing refreshing options for participants.
“Various sectors, including education, health, and social welfare, can hold programs here to make full use of this new facility,” he stated, indicating the broad potential for the Centre.
A Landmark for Gulmarg’s Tourism Profile
In closing, Omar Abdullah congratulated the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority, considering this project a landmark addition to Gulmarg’s tourism profile. “With proper management, the Gulmarg Convention Centre will not only be a hub for conferences but also a dynamic space for culture and leisure,” he concluded.
