BJP leader Amit Shah became India’s longest-serving Home Minister on August 5, the day which is considered as a politically charged date and holds historical significance under the Modi Government as it is the date when he had announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019, ending Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and splitting the State into two Union Territories.

Amit Shah surpassed the long held record by one of the biggest and most influential leaders of BJP and Former Deputy Prime Minister of India, Lal Krishna Advani who was a statesman and one of the co-founders of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Before Shah, there were two Home ministers having served for more than 6 years, the first one Govind Ballabh Pant of Congress who was 5th Home Minister of Independent India having served the position from January 10, 1955, to February 25, 1961, i.e. (2236 Days) totaling 6 years and 46 days., followed by BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani having served the position from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004, i.e. (2256 Days) totaling 6 years and 66 days.
Amit Shah who assumed the charge of Home Minister of India on May 30, 2019 completed a total of 2,258 days i.e. 6 years and 68 days in office as on 5th August the date of historical significance for Modi Government.

Amit Shah has been the pivotal force of Prime Minister Modi’s government, giving new directions to the Ministry of Home Affairs in charting its course in maintaining internal security and peace across the country. His tenure has been marked by several historic decisions. From the abrogation of Article 370 to completely overhauling criminal laws, curbing Naxal violence and spearheading the passage of the CAA are among the highlights of Shah’s stint. Shah has achieved several milestones during his tenure, the longest in history.

On such a huge achievement of Mr. Shah, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi on praised him for becoming the longest-serving home minister during the Parliamentary meeting of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), held on August 5, at the Parliament Library Building (PLB). The meeting was held while there was a deadlock in the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Parliament.

This comes days after PM Narendra Modi became India’s second-longest-serving Prime Minister after completing 4,078 consecutive days, surpassing former PM Indira Gandhi’s tenure of 4,077 days.
