The Armed Forces Day is celebrated on December 7 every year.

The armed forces of the country are our strength. They stand at the borders and put their lives in the line to ensure that the countrymen have a good sleep. They fight the enemies with bravery and valour and sometimes become martyrs just to serve the nation. The Armed Forces Flag Day is observed for commemoration in order to honour unwavering dedication, sacrifices and valor of the soldiers, sailors and airmen of India and for the collection of funds through distribution of flags for the betterment of the forces and pay our respects to the ones who laid their lives while protecting the country.
On this solemn day, people across the country come forward to sell coupon flags and various items, symbolizing their commitment to support our armed forces. The funds raised are crucial for providing better facilities and resources to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen who selflessly serve the nation.
The importance of Armed Forces Flag Day extends beyond fundraising. It serves as a collective effort to explore rehabilitation options for war victims and enhance the well-being of ex-servicemen personnel. As a nation, it is our duty to acknowledge the sacrifices made by our armed forces and express our gratitude.
The Flag Day is mainly observed to serve three basic purposes. These are, Rehabilitation of battle casualties, welfare of serving personnel, their families and resettlement and welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.
On the Flag Day all three branches of the Indian armed forces, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy, arrange a variety of shows, carnivals, dramas and other entertainment programmes to showcase to the general public the efforts of their personnel to ensure national security throughout the country small flags and car flags in red, deep blue and light blue colors representing the three Services are distributed in return for donations for collection of funds for the betterment of the Armed Forces Staff. The funds collected on the Armed Forces Flag Day are also used for the welfare of serving personnel and ex-servicemen and also to rehabilitate battle casualties.
The history behind observance of Armed Forces Flag Day is that immediately after India achieved independence, a need arose for the government to manage the welfare of its Defense personnel. On 28th August, 1949, a committee set up under the Defense Minister decided to observe a Flag Day annually on December 7. The idea behind observing a Flag Day was to distribute small flags to the general population and in return collect donations. Flag Day gains more significance as it considers that it is the responsibility of the civilian population of India to take care of the families and dependents of the armed forces personnel who fight for the country.
It is a time for Indians to express its gratitude and appreciation to the current and veteran military personnel of India and to acknowledge those who died in service to the country.
Every year the day is observed with a particular “Theme”. The theme for this year is “Symbol of Unity and Identity–The National Flag is more than a symbol; it embodies the unity, diversity, and aspirations of the Indian people”. Celebrations reaffirm these values and serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by freedom fighters that fought for India’s freedom.
