This brazen assault not only damaged official vehicles but also highlighted the deep-rooted impunity with which these operators function. Despite the High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh’s repeated warnings and its strict ban on mining activities in the Tawi River downstream of the Sidhra Bypass bridge, the mafia continues to operate with audacity, showcasing their growing organization and resistance to law enforcement.
The pelted stones, damaged vehicles, and swift mobilisation of dozens of men in response to the authorities’ presence are stark indicators of the mafia’s premeditated strategy and well-established networks. It is evident that critical information is being leaked, which allows these illegal operators to thwart enforcement efforts with alarming ease. This points to the possibility of local enablers working in tandem with the mafia, undermining efforts to uphold the law.
Perhaps most concerning is the apparent vulnerability of those responsible for enforcing the law. The police, reportedly forewarned of potential trouble and advised to carry arms, were ill-prepared for the confrontation, leading to a hasty retreat that left the G&M staff dangerously exposed. In a region where illegal mining is a highly profitable business, such lapses in preparedness are unacceptable.
