Aizawl, August 30 : Ahead of the state’s assembly elections, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), a prominent opposition party in Mizoram, has revealed its strategic alliance with the Hmar People’s Convention (HPC). The agreement was formally ratified in Sakawrdai village situated in the northeastern region of the state on Tuesday.

Under this accord, the HPC has committed to providing unwavering support to the ZPM during the forthcoming assembly polls, scheduled for later this year. Notably, the HPC has decided not to field any candidates of its own, ensuring that the ZPM candidates secure victory in the state assembly elections. This collaborative approach is aimed at consolidating the ZPM’s position in the electoral landscape.

In addition to the assembly polls, both parties have pledged to collaborate closely for the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) elections, scheduled for the next year, signaling a sustained cooperative effort.

The agreement also underscores the ZPM’s intention to uphold the terms of the Memorandum of Settlement inked between the Hmar People’s Convention-Democratic (HPC-D) and the Mizoram government in April 2018. If the ZPM attains power post the assembly elections, it vows to take tangible steps toward implementing this settlement.

Kenneth Chawngliana, Vice President of ZPM, highlighted that the HPC has entered into similar agreements with multiple parties in the past, yet the promised commitments remained unfulfilled. However, HPC President Rohringa emphasized the developmental disparity faced by Hmar-dominated regions within Mizoram and rallied party members to dedicate their utmost efforts to ensure the success of this alliance.
