New York, Jun 29 : Ajay Banga, the President of the World Bank, has been honored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York in their annual “Great Immigrants” list. The prestigious philanthropic organization acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to enrich and strengthen America and its democracy through their actions and achievements. Banga, the first-ever Indian American to lead the World Bank, stands as the sole honoree from India in this year’s esteemed list.
With an impressive career spanning over 30 years and holding key positions, the 63-year-old Banga is poised to bring transformative policies to combat poverty and address climate change during his tenure at the World Bank. His efforts are aimed at creating opportunities for people worldwide, promoting equitable and sustainable economic growth. Banga’s remarks during a fireside chat organized by Carnegie underscored the value of diversity in leadership, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with individuals from diverse backgrounds to avoid blind spots and seize new opportunities.
Banga’s professional journey began in India, where he spent significant time at Nestle India and PepsiCo. He later joined Citigroup in 1996, eventually rising to the position of CEO for the Asia-Pacific region. After relocating to the United States, Banga served as president and CEO of Mastercard for 12 years, during which he launched the Center for Inclusive Growth, a platform dedicated to advancing financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth worldwide.
Prior to his appointment as World Bank President, Banga served as vice-chairman at General Atlantic and co-founded the Cyber Readiness Institute. He also held the position of vice-chair at the Economic Club of New York. Banga’s outstanding achievements have garnered numerous accolades, including the Foreign Policy Association Medal, the Padma Shri Award by the President of India, and the Ellis Island Medal of Honour.
The Carnegie Corporation of New York annually honors a group of exceptional naturalized citizens on Independence Day, recognizing their contributions to the nation and democracy. This year, the list comprises 35 individuals from 33 countries with diverse backgrounds, including educators, mentors, philanthropists, public servants, and advocates.
