Srinagar : A recent spell of rain in the plains and light snowfall in the higher elevations of Kashmir on Thursday led to a further drop in temperatures. The Meteorological Department (MeT) predicted more precipitation over the next 24 hours.
MeT officials reported, “Most places in the plains of Kashmir received light rain late Thursday afternoon, while the higher reaches experienced fresh snowfall.”
The new rains led to a decrease in temperatures across the region. MeT officials mentioned that a weak Western Disturbance was influencing the weather, with the possibility of isolated light rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir on November 3. Another Western Disturbance is expected to affect the region starting on the night of November 7, although it won’t be a heavy spell.
The MeT in Srinagar forecasted rain and snow in select higher elevations for the following day. From November 7, Kashmir may experience wet weather conditions again. MeT officials stated, “The weather will mainly remain dry from November 4 to 6, with the possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches from November 7 to 8. From November 9 to 10, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy with light rain or snowfall over a few higher reaches. Overall, there is no significant weather activity until November 10.”
Razdan Top in Bandipora district experienced fresh light snowfall late at night, while light rain showers occurred in the lower areas. Kashmiri weather expert Faizan Arif attributed the light rain and snow to a weak Western Disturbance, especially in some parts of north Kashmir.
The minimum temperature recorded on Thursday was 6.7 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, followed by 4 degrees Celsius in Qazigund, 2.8 degrees Celsius in Pahalgam, 8.5 degrees Celsius in Kupwara, 6.5 degrees Celsius in Kokernag, and 3.9 degrees Celsius in Gulmarg.
The Bandipora-Gurez road was closed for traffic due to the snowfall at Razdan Top. Tulail Valley also received snowfall, and locals reported snow accumulation on most hills, with rains in the plains, including Dawar.
Officials announced that the road would remain closed until the weather conditions improve.
