Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday demanded an apology from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar regarding a controversial incident where Kumar pulled down the veil of a woman doctor during a government function in Patna. This incident, which took place on Monday, has sparked a considerable uproar across the nation.
During a press briefing, Abdullah asserted it was unacceptable for Kumar to touch the woman’s clothing, raising serious concerns about respect and personal boundaries. The event happened at the Bihar Secretariat, where Kumar allegedly remarked “What is this?” before removing the doctor’s naqab while distributing appointment letters for AYUSH doctors.
“Would you do such a thing? I know I would not,” Abdullah emphasized, highlighting the gravity of the situation. He added that the woman doctor has reportedly refused her appointment letter, indicating how deeply this incident impacted her. Abdullah urged Kumar to apologize and encourage the doctor to join the service.
Abdullah further reacted to the defense from Union Minister and BJP leader Giriraj Singh, stating that one cannot expect differing perspectives from the ruling party in this matter.
“If a Muslim leader had touched the veil of a Hindu woman in Haryana or Rajasthan, there would have been a massive uproar. However, since the woman involved here is Muslim, the BJP finds no wrongdoing,” he remarked, criticizing the political double standards.
While reiterating his standpoint, Abdullah clarified that the core issue transcended religious identity; it focused on dignity and appropriate conduct. He asked, “How can anyone touch a woman’s clothing in such a manner? What drove the Chief Minister to act in this way?” He called upon Nitish Kumar to acknowledge his mistake and apologize publicly.
Political Ramifications and National Discourse
In response to comments made by Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan regarding a “total defeat” in aerial combat with Pakistan on the first day of Operation Sindoor, Abdullah stated that Chavan’s views reflect his personal opinion and do not represent the Congress party’s official line.
“The Congress along with other opposition parties have stood firmly behind the government and the armed forces following the Pahalgam terror attack,” he added, positioning himself in support of national unity amid rising concerns over security issues.
Emphasizing Merit and Unity
Abdullah was in Patna for the 11th edition of the India’s International Movement to Unite Nations (IIMUN) Role Model Series. During his address, he expressed his perspectives on the “idea of India” and how Jammu and Kashmir’s historical decision to join India shaped a shared national identity.
“I hail from a Muslim-majority state that had the option to join Pakistan during Partition but chose India instead. This decision encapsulates an idea of India we must strive to preserve,” Abdullah articulated.
He expressed his concern over divisions within society fueled by differences in religious ideologies. He asserted that while perspectives about India may vary, democratic principles should allow open discussions without marginalization of any group.
Abdullah also addressed ongoing debates in Jammu and Kashmir on topics like medical college admissions and sports selections that often focus too heavily on religious identities. Referencing the recent controversy about admissions in the Vaishno Devi Medical College, where 42 out of 50 first MBBS students were Muslims, he argued for a focus solely on merit and talent.
“The balance that should matter is between those who are talented and those who are not. The India I envision for future generations prioritizes merit; religion should have no bearing on success in education or sports,” he concluded, promoting a vision of equality and excellence devoid of communal biases.
