Chief Minister Omar Abdullah sanctions ₹30.14 crore for welfare schemes aimed at benefiting construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This initiative, announced at a press conference, ensures direct online transfers to eligible beneficiaries under the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB).
Officials confirmed that the released funds aim to enhance the welfare of workers by quickly transferring money into the bank accounts of registered construction laborers. This move directly addresses the pressing needs of vulnerable communities within the unorganised sector.
The Jammu and Kashmir Labour Department elaborated that the sanctioned amount will support various flagship welfare schemes. These include education support, disability assistance, aid for chronic illness, marriage assistance, and welfare provisions for the next of kin of deceased workers.
During the recent 22nd meeting of the JKBOCWWB held in July, CM Abdullah highlighted the importance of broadening the definition of ‘construction worker.’ This qualifying measure ensures that more individuals in vulnerable positions benefit from existing welfare measures.
The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to exploring innovative policies that enhance coverage and secure the financial future of laborers. His statement elucidated the alignment of the board’s operations with national standards in labour welfare.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah stated, reinforcing his commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of laborers.
In addition to announcing welfare scheme funding, the Chief Minister expressed profound grief over a tragic bus accident that took place early this morning in Medina, Saudi Arabia, involving Indian Umrah pilgrims.
Initial reports indicate that a bus carrying 46 Indian pilgrims collided with a tanker, leading to catastrophic results. Tragically, the accident has resulted in the deaths of 45 pilgrims, with only one survivor who sustained serious injuries.
CM Abdullah conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families affected by this devastating accident and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
