The sacred town of Puri once again transformed into a sea of devotion and celebration as Bahuda Yatra 2025, the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, unfolded with grandeur, spiritual fervor, and renewed commitment to public safety. The Yatra is not just a religious procession—it is the living embodiment of Odisha’s cultural soul, a centuries-old tradition that continues to inspire millions with its message of faith, unity, and divine grace.
This year’s Bahuda Yatra holds special significance, coming just days after the unfortunate June 29 stampede near Shree Gundicha Temple, which claimed three lives and left scores injured. While the loss cast a shadow on the celebrations, it also catalyzed a more urgent and organized response from the administration. In what can be termed a commendable turnaround, the Odisha government, police, and local authorities ensured that the return Yatra proceeded smoothly, with unprecedented security arrangements in place.
More than 10,000 personnel, including police forces and central paramilitary troops, were deployed. Advanced technologies, including 275 AI-enabled CCTV cameras and drone surveillance, were utilized to monitor the crowd and maintain real-time situational awareness. This blending of tradition and technology showcases how heritage events can evolve responsibly in the modern era.
The Pahandi rituals, performed earlier than scheduled, unfolded seamlessly. The deities—Chakraraj Sudarshan, Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and finally Lord Jagannath—were brought out with divine pomp to their majestic chariots. The beating of gongs, blowing of conches, and chants of “Jai Jagannath” resonated through the town, echoing the immense spiritual energy that defines this festival.
