Art is not limited to colors and canvases; it depends on how we perceive and interpret things. With this mindset, Priya Gupta, an artist and the founder of Priya’s Colorful Backyard, has been transforming waste into beautiful artworks. Her journey from being a homemaker to a successful artist has been inspiring, with her family’s unwavering support playing a crucial role.
Inspired by Art Since Childhood
Priya Gupta’s interest in art began in her childhood. Her mother, a talented artist, was her first inspiration. Watching her mother paint and craft, Priya developed a deep connection with colors. However, after marriage and taking on family responsibilities, her passion gradually took a backseat. It was her son who recognized her hidden talent and encouraged her to return to the world of art.
COVID-19: A Turning Point
Besides being an artist, Priya also runs a boutique. However, during the COVID-19 lockdown, when her business was affected, she found herself with ample free time. Observing the waste materials at home, she had an idea: “What if, instead of discarding these items, they could be transformed into something beautiful?” Acting on this thought, she created her first piece—an old tape roll repurposed into a beautiful basket.
“Household Waste is the Biggest Resource”
Priya believes that most waste originates from our homes, but if used creatively, it can become valuable. She started recycling plastic, old tires, broken bulbs, discarded bottles, empty paint cans, and other unusable items into attractive home décor pieces.
Her unique creations include tribal masks made from cold drink bottles, garden planters crafted from old tires, lamps designed from broken bulbs, and paintings on plastic bottles. What began as an experiment soon became her passion, and she eventually made a name for herself in this field.
Family: The Biggest Strength
Priya acknowledges the immense support of her family in her journey. Her son not only praised her first recycled artwork but also motivated her to pursue it further. Her husband consistently encouraged her and helped her adopt new techniques. Their unwavering support has played a vital role in her success.
Recognition at the State Level
Priya’s work has now gained recognition on a broader platform. She has participated in various state-level exhibitions, where her recycled creations have been highly appreciated. Her artworks have found a place in many homes, earning her well-deserved recognition.
A Message for the Youth
Priya Gupta believes that today’s younger generation needs to embrace waste recycling. She emphasizes:
“Every object we consider waste can become a beautiful piece of art if seen from the right perspective. Creativity should not be limited to painting alone; rather, we should incorporate recycling and upcycling into our daily lives.”
Future Plans
Priya is now planning to expand her initiative on a larger scale. She aims to raise awareness about recycling and inspire more people to adopt it in their daily lives. In the future, she hopes to establish a workshop and training center where people can learn the art of creating useful items from waste materials.
Her ultimate dream is to see her artworks displayed at the national level and to encourage more individuals to join this movement. Through her efforts, she not only promotes creativity but also contributes to environmental conservation.
